Wayne Alexander McLeod

Since we're fairly certain that John Culbert's brother was Richard Culbert, it's time we include Richard's descendants in our Culbert Family History blog too. We're all related!

So today, I'm introducing Richard's great-great-grandson, Wayne McLeod of London, Ontario, Canada. Wayne was born 13 October 1945 in Sarnia, Ontario. He was the eldest child of Roselle Alexandria Walton (a Culbert descendant) and her husband, John Alexander McLeod.

Wayne says, "I was shipped north to my McLeod grandparents when I was a little over two years old. I came back to Sarnia when I was 5. Mum had 4 of us in 3 years (including twins) which was too much for her to handle. Pampers® weren't invented yet."

Here's Wayne to tell us more about himself. Welcome, Wayne!

WAYNE ALEXANDER McLEOD

At the age of 14, living in North Bay, Ontario, I started part-time work at a small meat shop, Hollows Meat Market at 122 Main Street.

At 16, I left school and home. Grade 10 was all that was required in those days to pursue a career in just about any vocation you wanted to pursue.

I joined the military under the Soldier Apprentice plan which consisted of two years schooling and three years service. Before being called up, my employers at Hollows Meat Market offered me a full-time position as a meat cutter for $50 a week. These were the days when hamburger was 3 pounds for one dollar, short rib roast $0.39 a pound, prime rib roast $0.69 a pound, etc. I therefore turned the military career down.

At the age of 18, I started a new career at Dominion Stores for $74.50 a week. Two weeks later I was offered $87.50 a week and transferred to Kapuskasing, Ontario. Kapuskasing in the winter time is not a place to be running around in a pair of shorts. LOL!

Eventually, I came back to North Bay, got married and started raising a family. I raised three children, two of which are now gone, along with their mother.

I was a business partner in various locations and eventually ended up working for A&P Canada in 1976. A few years later, I was meat manager and in 1981, I was offered a supervision position out of Toronto head office.

I was an Auxiliary Constable with the OPP (Ontario Provincial Police) prior to my promotion to Toronto.

As a Deli / Meat Specialist, I had the Province of Ontario to supervise. Eventually, the supervision came down to southwest Ontario which is where I retired.

Due to work related injuries that had occurred over time, I elected to complete my remaining years with the Health and Safety Department. My many years of experience in the perishable departments allowed me to create acceptable working conditions for injured employees. So eventually I ended up being a Health and Safety Rehabilitation Specialist.

I retired in 2011 at the age of 66 and have not looked back.

But old age sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
