Barbara Högenauer is the life partner of Terry Culbert, an artist we met in the previous post.
Barbara Annemarie Lehmann was born 16 September 1943 in Prenzlau, Brandenburg, Germany to parents, Hans Lehmann and Marta Wehlig. Following her mother's death when Barb was 2 1/2 years old, she was raised by her aunt Anne in Hamburg, the second largest city in Germany. It was here that Barb saw the Beatles perform at the Star-Club in 1962 before they made their American debut in 1964. She immigrated to Canada in 1967. Previous to meeting Terry, Barb was married; hence, her surname, Högenauer. Barb lives in Prince Edward County, Ontario. She works alongside Terry in their in-house studio-gallery, Prince Edward’s County Studio.
Now, let's hear from Barbara in her own words, followed by a selection of her paintings.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My first art lesson took place at a very early age in Berlin, Germany. My aunt, art historian and practicing artist, introduced me to museums, galleries and contemporary artists. The seed was planted but lay dormant for a long time. I like to think it needed to permeate before being realized. My muse is the natural world. I love the elusive quality of the landscape, the moving light, the mystery of what the eye sees. All this is stored somewhere subconsciously, together with images of years of canoe tripping through Ontario’s parks and rivers. My canvas typically goes through various layers of paint, building up texture with palette knives and various mark-making tools until the final piece comes into its own – a very intuitive process. The initial inspiration is the key to what evolves. I welcome challenges, often working with small en plein air studies, transferring those to larger canvases. I primarily use acrylic paints but also work with oil and cold wax medium. Attempting to interpret the natural world, creating work that evokes an emotional impact, is what intrigues and drives me.
My work is in private collections in Canada, United States and Germany. I am a member of Prince Edward County Arts Council, CARFAC, as well as associate member of the Society of Canadian Artists.
