"Crafty Culberts" Presents Terry Culbert

Terrence Patrick “Terry” Culbert was born 13 May 1942 in London, Ontario, Canada, and grew up in Lucan, Ontario. Terry (the great-great-grandson of John Culbert and Mary Ward) lives in Prince Edward County, Ontario with his partner, Barbara Högenauer.

Terry needs no further introduction (click here if you missed his biography) so let’s hear from Terry himself now, followed by a selection of his paintings…

ARTIST STATEMENT

I have drawn since childhood – since I could hold a pencil. Upon graduation with honours from Beal School of Art in London, Ontario, my career path took me into television news. For the first few years I worked as an illustrator in the news department. Forty-two years were spent in television behind and in front of the camera, cartooning and illustrating throughout. During that time, I wrote and illustrated two books. Today, I am a full-time artist, creating alongside my life partner, Barbara Högenauer, in our in-house studio-gallery Prince Edward’s County Studio. Utilizing my drawing skills and my love for colour, my works vary from whimsical to almost illustrative. Each canvas tells a story, often humorous, always bold. My paintings reflect my personality.

One of my passions is travelling with Barb in our RV “Painted Lady”, capturing landscapes and people in my sketchbook, on canvas and through the lens of my camera as we travel throughout North America. I also do commissions, working step-by-step with my clients.

Here are some examples of Terry's artwork. Please click on the images to enlarge them...

Terry's roots are reflected in these paintings of his home town, Lucan, Ontario...

Entitled My Father's Store, this painting shows a section of the west side of Lucan's Main Street as it looked in the 1950s. The centre building is Mel Culbert's 5 Cents to a Dollar Store. a dry goods store owned and operated by Terry's father, Milward Taylor "Mel" Culbert.

Strasser's Lunch and Bill Cochrane's Barber Shop on Lucan's Main Street. Back in the 1950s, "Ma Strasser" owned the restaurant, and it was a Friday night hangout for Terry Culbert and his friends who ate chips and drank Wishing Well lemon lime and Vernors (oak-aged) ginger ale.

Clarence Lewis's Barber Shop and Pool Room in the 1950s on Main Street in Lucan.

St. Patrick Catholic Parish on the Roman Line in Lucan-Biddulph.

Terry's paintings have also appeared as wine bottle labels...
