If you read my earlier post about Richard Culbert, you know that he was the youngest son of John Culbert and Mary Ward of Biddulph Township near Lucan, Ontario, Canada. I also wrote about Richard's wife, Jane Eleanor Fairhall, here.

It was Richard Culbert who took over the family farm when his father, John Culbert died in 1887. At that point, Richard and Jane and their children had been living in a log house at Lot 19, Concession 2 (the Coursey Line) in Biddulph Township, along with other family members. I'm sure that Richard and Jane must have longed for a larger house. By 1900, Richard had built a new brick house, and christened the property "Poplar Farm." The photo below shows the new brick house ...

Richard Culbert and Jane Fairhall had seven children, six of whom lived to adulthood. Richard and Jane's children are listed as follows. You can click on the highlighted links for those children with biographies.

Hulda May (Culbert) Carscallen (1881-1972)

George Arthur Culbert (1882-1978)

Myron Manford Culbert (1884-1961)

Ethel Gertrude (Culbert) Gras (1886-1986)

Mary Elsie (Culbert) Hodgson (1888-1988)

Lela Susan (Culbert) Beadle (1890-1992)

Richard Edwin Culbert (1896-1896. Infant death).

When Richard and Jane Culbert retired to a small house in Lucan, their son Myron took over Poplar Farm. Myron Culbert married Effie Pearl Taylor (1886-1957). Effie Taylor's family lived in Usborne Township near Exeter, Ontario.

The photo below shows Effie Taylor with her parents and siblings circa 1899 or earlier...

Thank you to my aunt Muriel (Hardy) Culbert for safekeeping these photos for many years. The photos are much larger than they appear here, and they are behind glass with frames. Thank you to my sister, Dana Elizabeth (Culbert) Garrett for suggesting that photos be taken of the large, framed photos in order to share them with you on the Culbert Family History blog. Thank you to my brother, Terrence Patrick "Terry" Culbert for taking photos of those big framed photographs. And thank you to Muriel's son, Tim Culbert for inviting Terry and Dana into his home to take the photos. A successful family project, all round.

The Royal Family and the Culberts

No, we're not members of the Royal Family. (Although virtually everyone of European ancestry like us is descended from royalty - specifically Charlemagne.) However, our relative, the late Helen (Needham) Culbert (1918-2018) the wife of Kenneth Arthur Culbert did have a brush of sorts with royalty. On her 100th birthday, Helen Culbert received congratulations from Her Majesty  ...

Helen Culbert on her 100th birthday in 2018.

Yesterday, 8 September 2022, Queen Elizabeth II died. 70 years earlier, her father, King George VI died on 6 February 1952. Here's how our ancestors and relatives in Lucan, Ontario paid tribute to their late King ...

Source: Exeter Times-Advocate, 21 February 1952, page 11.

A few of our relatives are mentioned in that same 1952 edition of the newspaper in regard to a meeting of the Lucan W.I. (Women's Institute)

I've broken up the Lucan W.I. article into three parts to show the highlighted names of three Culbert woman and to show photos of the Culbert women (where applicable) from my collection.

Mrs. U.F. Stanley who read "A Tribute to the King" was Leda Marie (Kent) Stanley (1892-1971), the wife of U.F. "Roy" Stanley, Lucan's hardware merchant. Leda's mother, Mary Ann (Culbert) Kent was the youngest daughter of John Culbert and Mary Ward. No photo available of Leda. Please contact me if you have a photo of Leda.

Mrs. Cap Howard, district director of the Lucan Women's Institute was Cora Letitia (Culbert) Howard (1881-1957). She was the wife of Cap Howard, retired, who had a reputation for having been one of the best stage coach drivers in Middlesex County, and later a motor bus driver. Cora's father, Joseph Culbert was the son of John Culbert and Mary Ward.

Mrs. Cliff Culbert was Gladys Lillian (Beattie) Culbert, the wife of Clifford Burton Culbert.

The Lucan Biddulph Villager offers the residents of Lucan Biddulph the opportunity to learn more about their community. The magazine’s focus is on small businesses, organizations and institutions in the township, activities and events, profiles of residents, and even local history.

The June 2022 issue features a story about Lucan’s early days. In “Lucky Lucan Comes a Long Way” by staff writer, Lynne Williams, you’ll see two postcards from the collection of our relative, the late Hulda May(Culbert) Carscallen...

If you’re a descendant of John Culbert and Mary Ward, your ancestors lived in Lucan Biddulph. John Culbert and Mary Ward were among the early settlers of Biddulph Township, arriving from Ireland in 1840. John and Mary would be amazed by the area’s growth and to know that Lucan Biddulph has its own magazine.

WHERE CAN I GET A COPY OF THE LUCAN BIDDULPH VILLAGER?

If you live outside of the Lucan Biddulph area, you can visit Villager Publications' website each month to view the latest edition. Don’t delay because back copies are available online for a limited time (about six months.) If you live in Lucan Biddulph, copies are delivered free to local residences, and set out at local venues such as Lucan Drug Mart, Langford Lumber, and other locations.
