Congratulations to Lucan, Ontario, winner of the 2018 Kraft Hockeyville competition!
Hockey has always been big in Lucan. Terry Culbert (born 1942) grew up in Lucan. Terry recalls that before the Lucan Community Centre was constructed, all the village kids played hockey either on Shipley's Pond or behind the coal shed at Scott's Elevator.
That community centre, built in 1950 was torn down and replaced by the new Lucan Community Memorial Centre which opened in 1978. After 40 years, the building is ready for improvements.
The Kraft Hockeyville victory means Lucan will get $250,000 for arena upgrades, and $10,000 worth of hockey equipment from the National Hockey League Players' Association. Lucan will also host an NHL pre-season game. More on the story here.

Hockey history was made in Lucan in 1952. The Montreal Canadiens played Lucan! How did that happen, you ask? My aunt Muriel's father, Frank Hardy was a close friend of the Canadien's coach, Dick Irvin. As a personal favour to Frank, Dick brought his team to Lucan for a match with the Lucan Irish Six hockey team. A couple of names you might recognize in the Montreal lineup included Maurice "The Rocket" Richard, and Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion.

Lucan has long been a hockey ville but now it's official. Congratulations Lucan!
Before you skate away, can you spot the Culbert in this old photo of the Lucan Pee Wee hockey team?...
